Overview

About this tour

The East route is a completely different Elbrus. It leads to the East summit, 5,621 m, through the Irik-Chat gorge — one of the most beautiful and wild approaches to the mountain. There are no cable cars, snowcats, hotels, restaurants or roads here: only mountains, gorges, passes, rivers, waterfalls, glaciers and open Caucasus landscapes. It is a genuine multi-day mountain trek in which you gain height gradually through wild high valleys.

Until the assault camp you walk with a fully loaded rucksack of about 27–30 kg holding your personal gear, clothing, food and everything you need to live in the mountains. This is not a stroll or the comfortable classic South side: expect long days under a heavy pack, steady height gain and several days of sustained effort. Good physical fitness and readiness for camping conditions are essential, but no special climbing experience is required — we explain and practise the movement skills and use of mountain equipment on the route.

Our programme has an extra advantage: highly qualified guides at a ratio of one per three participants. That means attention for each climber, careful control of pace, group condition and safety throughout the expedition, and a better chance of reaching the summit and coming down safely.

  • Stand on the East summit of Elbrus, 5,621 m, after a true multi-day trek
  • Walk up the wild Irik-Chat gorge past forests, waterfalls and alpine meadows
  • Cross the Irik-Chat pass and the glacier, with views of the Dzhikaugenkez ice plateau and the Achkeryakol lava flow
  • Smooth, stepped acclimatisation, with a main acclimatisation day to 5,000 m at the edge of Elbrus's side crater
  • 1 guide per 3 climbers; no previous climbing experience needed
  • Rest day before the summit and two reserve days for weather

Day by day

Itinerary

Weather may change the order of days; your guide always has a reserve plan.

  1. Day1

Drive to the Irik-Chat gorge and first camp

    2,351 m

Arrive the day before for the gear check at our Pyatigorsk office, then meet there in the morning with your packed rucksack. After the briefing we drive 147 km to the village of Elbrus, stopping for lunch at a roadside café. Today's walk is short: a 5.2 km path up the Irik-Chat gorge. We camp in a pine forest beside a river and a waterfall at 2,351 m, having gained 529 m.

  2. Day2

    Irik valley

    2,889 m

We climb higher up the gorge (5.1 km). The forest falls behind and the alpine meadows begin. Here we practise walking and breathing technique. Night in the valley at 2,889 m, after a gain of 538 m.

  3. Day3

To the foot of the Irik-Chat pass

    3,093 m

We walk 2.9 km to the tongue of the Irik glacier, gaining 204 m, and pitch tents below the pass at 3,093 m. You may carry a share of the gear beyond the Red Hill (Ryzhy Bugor, 3.8 km there and back) to make tomorrow's carry easier and help acclimatisation.

  4. Day4

Over the Irik-Chat pass and across the glacier

    3,851 m

We climb the Irik-Chat pass (4 km), with views back over the valley and across the Dzhikaugenkez ice plateau to Kalitsky Peak and the Achkeryakol lava flow of Elbrus. Roped together, we cross the glacier and pitch camp beside a small lake at 3,851 m, a gain of 758 m.

Accommodation & meals

Tent camps in the gorge and on the glacier

All nights on the mountain are in tents (one tent per 2–4 people): in pine forest by a river, in the high valley, below the pass, beside a glacial lake and at the assault camp at about 4,300 m. Bring or rent a −10 °C sleeping bag and a mat. Accommodation in Pyatigorsk is not included.

Meals

Food is not part of the Basic price: the expedition food package (≈ €200) is booked separately, and you carry your share with the group's gear. On day 1 we stop for lunch at a roadside café on the way.

To the mountains, only with Elbrus Expert

“For me, the most important and obvious advantage when choosing a company for a climb to Elbrus was that Elbrus Expert immediately provides information about which guide will lead the group. You can find out about his experience in detail both on the company's website and on the FAR website. The list is impressive, their portfolio shows that the company's management is focused on professionalism and safety. Later, the list of advantages expanded: there is a large selection of directions (actually there is an opportunity to participate in an event at any time), various service packages (standard and premium), their own rental of everything needed, well-thought-out logistics and tour organization, and most importantly, a fairly flexible approach to providing additional services. For example, in mid-June I went on a tour to Elbrus from the East, two days we sat in the assault camp waiting for a weather window, one night our tents were covered with snow and some were torn. The weather forecast did not promise improvement and we had to end the climb early. At our request, within the tour dates, the company's management organized a climb to the summit from the South for those who wanted, and it didn't try to "cash in" on this situation at all, instead offering several acceptable options for organizing additional activities. As a result, we still made it to the summit of Elbrus. Definitely recommend for cooperation”

    Best Elbrus trip

“Excellent organization of the tour to Elbrus! Professional guides, focus on safety and comfort of participants. Went from the East, a difficult route, but an acceptable pace for beginners. Equipment and clothing from the travel agency are of high quality and in full supply. I brought back half the food, there was so much of it. Thank you to the organizers for the high quality of service, next year I plan to repeat it, but by a different route. I recommend these guys, they work conscientiously.”

FAQ

Good to know

How fit do I need to be, and do I need climbing experience?

You need good fitness and a readiness for camping: the route means long days with a rucksack of about 27–30 kg, steady height gain and several days of sustained effort. Special mountaineering experience is not required — we explain and practise the movement skills and equipment use on the route.

How do I get to the start?

Fly into Mineralnye Vody (MRV). Our Pyatigorsk office (Lenin Square 13, Intourist Hotel) is 27 km from the airport — about 25 minutes by taxi. You can arrive the day before, when the office receives participants from 08:00 to 18:00 for gear checks and rental, or on the morning of day 1 between 08:00 and 10:00. A private pick-up at Mineralnye Vody airport or station is included in Premium.

Where do I stay in Pyatigorsk?

Accommodation in Pyatigorsk is not included. Hostels (roughly €5–10 a night), hotels and apartments are all close to our office, and we can help you find something suitable. You can leave spare luggage at the office while you are on the mountain — storage is included in Premium, or about €5 otherwise.

How heavy will my rucksack be?

On tent tours you carry your personal kit and a share of the group gear — including tents and food packs — up to the assault camp, so expect about 27–30 kg. Choose a rucksack of 85–90 L (women) or 85–110 L (men).

What does the Premium package add?

Premium costs about €200 more than Basic and adds: a 30% discount on equipment and clothing rental; a place in a 2–4 person tent for the whole trip; the official Russian Mountaineering Federation (FAR) "For climbing Elbrus" badge and a climber's logbook entry if you reach the summit (each about €10); a private pick-up from Mineralnye Vody airport or station to our office (≈ €10); a private transfer back at the end (≈ €10); and luggage storage during the tour (≈ €5).

How do I reserve a place?

Pay the booking fee (≈ €200 for Basic, ≈ €250 for Premium) to reserve your place and lock in the price, or pay for the tour in full. You can switch from Basic to Premium later; the Premium price is calculated at the time you ask.
