Overview
About this tour
"Touching Elbrus" is the first part of the programme: a chance to go up to the legendary mountain and be inspired by its scale. The route starts in Pyatigorsk and suits anyone who dreams of seeing Elbrus and Cheget up close, along with the panorama of the whole Greater Caucasus range. You get a comfortable transfer, a tasting of Caucasian dishes with great views, and cable-car rides up Cheget and up Elbrus to Garabashi station (3,847 m).
On day 2 you set off through one of the most beautiful gorges in the Elbrus area, Irik-Chat. The trail starts in the village of Elbrus and passes a narzan mineral spring on its way towards the sand castles, then climbs a little to a valley between the south-eastern and eastern spurs of Elbrus — the very place where the eastern climbing route begins. The first half runs through pine forest along the Irik river, with a waterfall on the way and local homemade cheese and ayran to buy. A short climb brings you to a camp in the upper reaches of the river, with views of the Caucasus main range from the Georgian side, the Ushba peak, and the eastern slope of Elbrus with the Achkeryakol lava flow.
Towards evening a starry sky opens up, almost like walking along the Milky Way. If you would rather not carry a heavy pack, you can hire horses to take your gear up.
- Cable car up Elbrus to Garabashi station (3,847 m) and up Cheget, with panoramas of the whole Caucasus range
- An easy trek of about 10 km in the Irik-Chat gorge: pine forest, waterfall, meadows and Elbrus seen from the east
- A night in a tent camp at about 2,351 m under a sky full of stars
- Tasting of Caucasian dishes and a stop at the narzan mineral spring glade on the way back
- Hotel night in Terskol, tent rental, meals on the trek and all transfers included

- Day1
To the Elbrus area and up by cable car
3,847 mWe leave Pyatigorsk early in the morning for the Elbrus area, the heart of the Baksan gorge. A cable car takes us up Elbrus to Garabashi station (3,847 m), with a magnificent panorama of Elbrus and the entire Greater Caucasus range. We also ride the cable car up Mount Cheget (to 3,465 m) to see Elbrus from the side and enjoy views of Donguz-Orun, the famous Semyorka glacier and Nakra-Tau. In the evening we check in to a cosy hotel in Terskol and rest before tomorrow's adventure.
- Day2
Trek into the heart of the Caucasus — Irik-Chat gorge
2,351 mAfter breakfast at the hotel we transfer to the village of Elbrus, where the trek begins. Irik-Chat is a gorge of crystal-clear rivers, alpine meadows full of flowers and majestic rocks soaring into the sky. On the trail you pass pine forest, sand castles, wide meadows, snowy peaks and Elbrus from the east, with waterfalls and a rich variety of flora and fauna on the way. The round trip is 10.4 km. In the evening we pitch camp in the open to enjoy dinner, the silence and the starry sky of the Caucasus. Night in tents at about 2,351 m.
- Day3
Back to Pyatigorsk via the narzan glade
We have breakfast in the fresh air and break camp, then walk back to the village of Elbrus, where a transfer takes us to Pyatigorsk. On the way we stop at the narzan glade to taste the healing mineral water straight from the spring, and return to Pyatigorsk full of impressions and the energy of the Caucasus.

FAQ
Good to know
Is this trek suitable for beginners?
Yes. It is an easy introduction with no summit push: cable cars on day 1 and a trek of about 10 km round trip on day 2, ending in a camp at around 2,351 m. It suits beginners.
Do I have to carry a heavy rucksack?
You carry your own gear on the trek, but you can have it taken up on horses for about €200 per horse. The cost can be split between several participants, and the total load for the group is limited to 50 kg.
What is provided for sleeping, and what do I bring?
Tents for 2, 3 or 4 people are rented for you and gas stoves are provided for cooking. You bring your own sleeping bag, sleeping mat and personal gear from the list.
How do I book, and what is the minimum group?
You secure your place with a booking deposit of about €100, which fixes the price; you can also pay in full. The tour runs when at least 4 participants have signed up. The route starts in Pyatigorsk, so fly into Mineralnye Vody (MRV) and allow time to reach Pyatigorsk the evening before the early-morning start; hostels start from about €10 a night, and we can help you find a place to stay.
