Moscow is more than Russia's capital—it's the natural starting point for every foreign adventurer heading to the mountains. Home to three major international airports, world-class hospitality, and centuries of history compressed into walkable neighborhoods, Moscow gives you the perfect introduction to Russian culture before you venture into the wilderness.

Getting There Is Easy

Three of the busiest airports in Europe—Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, and Vnukovo—all serve Moscow. Direct flights connect to over 150 cities worldwide. Most visitors arrive at Sheremetyevo (SVO, 35 km north) or Domodedovo (DME, 42 km southeast); both are 45 minutes from the city centre by Aeroexpress train or shared transfer. Expect to land, clear immigration and customs, and be in your hotel within two hours.

Allow 2–3 Days in the City

One day gets you to Red Square, inside the Kremlin, and through a few metro stations—enough to say you've been. Two days lets you walk through historic neighborhoods, visit museums, and understand Moscow's rhythm. Three days is ideal: you'll sleep off jet lag, explore at a human pace, and arrive in the mountains refreshed rather than exhausted. Many of our guests use Moscow as a decompression chamber, trading jet lag for time before their trek.

Icons You'll Want to See

Red Square and the Kremlin

The symbolic heart of Russia. Walk across the square at sunset, slip into the Cathedral of the Archangel Michael, watch the changing of the guard. Spend 2–3 hours.

Moscow Metro

Called the "people's palaces," the stations are artworks of Soviet design. Take the Circle Line, get off at any station that catches your eye, and sit on a bench. Thirty minutes, unforgettable.

Novodevichy Convent and Cemetery

A working monastery surrounded by birch trees and autumn light. Moscow's most serene corner. Allow 1.5 hours.

Neighbourhood Walks

Arbat Street for bohemian bookshops and street musicians; Patriarch's Ponds for literary history and quiet cafés; the Moscow River embankment for views of the Kremlin.

Logistics: Connecting to the Mountains

To Elbrus and the North Caucasus

Fly or take the overnight train to Mineralnye Vody (4 hours by plane, 30 hours by train). From there, it's 2.5 hours by car up the Caucasus slopes. We handle ground transfers; all you do is show up at the airport.

To Altai

Gorno-Altaysk (13 hours by plane with a stop, or overnight trains with transfers). From the city, you're 2–3 hours' drive from your first alpine meadow.

To Kamchatka

Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky (6 hours from Moscow with a connection, usually through Vladivostok). Tighter logistically, but the reward is a landscape untouched by foot traffic.
